I was diagnosed at age 8 and diabetes does not run in my family so it was a huge shock to us all. I am very fortunate to have been awarded some great opportunities growing up-from speaking at a gala for diabetes to meeting Nicole Johnson, Miss USA 1999 who is a type 1 diabetic (she even showed me some pump tricks). I’ve also been able to help newly diagnosed diabetics along the way. I just celebrated my 21st diaversary and couldn’t have done it without the support of family and friends.
How has diabetes contributed to forming you into the person you are today? Mentally, physically, or emotionally?
Many people have a misconception of diabetes (not even knowing there are two types). Growing up I quickly learned not everyone is accepting of something out of their norm and to never let negative comments affect me. I feel educating people is the best way to deal with ignorance.
Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 regular sized ducks?
