I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 15. This news was very hard for me because I had to face a completely different world than I was used. From one day to another in my life there appeared syringes, insulin, needles, and glucometers. In addition several words began to be important such as hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, carbohydrates, and many others. I thought I would never adapt to this lifestyle, but luckily I was wrong haha. In these 3 years I understood that diabetes is part of me, that I can live with without hindrance because it isn’t a limit at all.
Today I feel super good and have good control because I decided to take control. I know we will always cross with people who speak without knowing and they will say thinks like : ” You are diabetic! You can’t eat sweets!” “If you play sports you can pass out!” or ” My grandmother died of diabetes.” Although those comments hurt I understood that many people are not made aware about what Type 1 Diabetes is.
Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to tell my story!
