What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
Thats is really nice MP3 player!! I have one just like it!! …… in reference to my insulin pump.
I responded thanks! Mine is so fancy that it’s literally connected to me and I don’t need headphones because it already connects like Bluetooth to my brain cells.

Has anyone told you that you couldn’t do something due to your diabetes, and you proved them wrong?
Doctors have told me that traveling with diabetes is hard and that I may want to avoid it. So I do the exact opposite. I have a passion for visiting new places and experiencing new cultures. I have had a chance to go to Thailand and do outreach in the Red Light District and ride elephants, visit the Christ Redeemer in Brazil, zip line in Costa Rica, visit Sigmund Freud’s house in Austria and mourn at Auschwitz in Poland. Diabetes doesn’t stop me!

How do you inspire others?
Diabetes has influenced my career choice. I currently am a senior at Malone University. I study Social Work so I can hopefully become a clinical counselor to show newly diagnosed diabetics that this new aspect of their life can be not so bad. Mental health is so important during the diagnosis of T1D.

Tell us a story about how diabetes has affected you.
Although this disease is annoying as heck (can I get an amen?!), it has brought me so many opportunities. One of my favorites is my involvement in Students With Diabetes. I have attended the conference in Florida for the past two years and plan to go again. This conference brings in almost 200 T1Ds from across the country. My first time there, I felt more cared about than ever. It’s like T1D is code of awesome.

How has diabetes contributed to forming you into the person you are today? Mentally, physically, or emotionally?
I think that it shows me to appreciate the little things in life. There are so many things we can live without, including insulin (ba dum tss!)

Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 regular sized ducks?
Probably one horse sized duck.
