What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
“Can you this or that?”
The girls who asked me were my friends. I didn’t give them this look because they were afraid of losing me. I responded to them that I have Type 1 Diabetes. It’s completely fine to have sugary things (even though I rarely eat them). I just have to eat it in moderation, count the carbs, and bolus.

Has anyone told you that you couldn’t do something due to your diabetes, and you proved them wrong?
There was this group of elderly women at my church. They explained to me that I would have to sit in and special education room, or have a “normal life” with “normal friends”. Well now I’m an A’s and B’s student taking Pre Advance Program throughout middle school, and advanced classes in High School. My friends don’t see me any different and neither do the teachers. In fact, I do marching band, volleyball, and go out a couple of times with my “normal friends”.

How do you inspire others?
I inspire others by not letting diabetes get in the way of life. Always stay positive about it. Achieve your dreams. Us diabetics are a proud nation. We are all proud owners of a useless pancreas .

Tell us a story about how diabetes has affected you.
Some days I have my bad days. Sometimes I can’t hangout with my friends or even get out of bed. I’ve missed numerous games because of lows and highs. But then there are my happy days. This is when I want to do everything. But if I didn’t get diabetes, I wouldn’t know about this community filled with kids my age or even get to go to camp with them. Since I was diagnosed a week before my sixth birthday, I’ve been pretty happy to have diabetes.

How has diabetes contributed to forming you into the person you are today? Mentally, physically, or emotionally?
I think it made me a tiny bit more mature. In my mind, I think to myself ” why me of all people “. Sometimes I just go cry because it gets hard. But physically I can do it.

Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 regular sized ducks?
Probably one horse sized duck. I’d rather have one giant bite in one place, than 100 bites in every place.
