Hi my name is Marilyn, I am 14yrs.old I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 6. I am in taekwondo, in my school marching band and very involved in my church. Having diabetes can be challenging especially when you are told you cant go on a field trip because your parents cant go along with you. This only made me feel like I can do everything I put my mind to.
Has anyone told you that you couldn’t do something due to your diabetes, and you proved them wrong?
Yes, one of my friends told me I cant participate in taekwondo because of my diabetes. I have been in taekwondo for 3 years now and I will be testing for my black belt in December.
How do you inspire others?
I love to help my family especially my great grandmother when it comes to helping her with her diabetes medication.I stay positive when it comes to my diabetes, we will find a cure one day. My dream is to become a famous chef and make meals that are healthy for everyone.
Tell us a story about how diabetes has affected you.
Diabetes has affected me in so many ways, such as when I am having a long day at band practice or at a taekwondo competition and I feel my sugar dropping I have to wait until I am ready to fight or perform with my band.
How has diabetes contributed to forming you into the person you are today? Mentally, physically, or emotionally?
Diabetes has proven to me that I can do anything I put my mind to. Physically I know I have to exercise to stay healthy.
Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 regular sized ducks?
I would rather fight one horse sized duck. Lol…
