Hi. I’m Makayla, and on April first of 2015, I was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes. I’d been having most of the symptoms, but everyone just thought it was my thyroid because almost everyone has thyroid problems in my family. None of my family members had diabetes. I had a check up & they did blood work. That night they called and said I needed to either go to the ER, or wait until the next day. I ended up going that night & my blood sugar was in the 700’s. I ended up staying over night. I’ve got my sugar under control now, & I take better care of myself than I ever had before. I’m thankful for my diabetes.
Question #1: What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
So you’ve had diabetes your whole life & didn’t know it? I basically just gave them a book that the doctors from the hospital gave me & was like “read this.”
Question #5: How has diabetes contributed to forming you into the person you are today? Mentally, physically, or emotionally?
Diabetes has matured me a lot. I’ve been taking better care of myself. I’m so proud of myself for being able to do all of this.
