Lorelei

I’m 23 and married. I was recently pregnant but lost my baby around 9 weeks. Not sure if the miscarriage was due to my diabetes or just stress or just because it wasn’t the right time but my husband and I will try later in life for a baby. Working on getting back on the pump and currently kicking diabetes butt.

What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
How do you stab yourself so much? I said “I do it because I have to. I want to live.”

Has anyone told you that you couldn’t do something due to your diabetes, and you proved them wrong?
Yes. I was told I couldn’t play sports and I played softball up to my freshman year. I didn’t quit bc of my diabetes I quit because I wanted to stay focused on my school work.

How do you inspire others?
I don’t let my diabetes stop me from doing what I love.

Tell us a story about how diabetes has affected you.
My first ever low was back in 2012 just a couple of days after I had graduated high school. I was being stupid and not really doing what I should have with my diabetes and not eating right like I should have and I was on an insulin pump at the time and because I wasn’t eating it made my blood sugar drop. My boyfriend at the time woke up to me being unresponsive and he called my best friend over. He asked me if I knew who he was and I kept saying no and my best friend for almost 16 years asked if I knew who she was and I kept telling her no. They called an ambulance and when they tested my blood sugar it was 12. They rushed me to the hospital and I remember waking up there with no memory of what had happened. After that I didn’t mess around anymore. That was the scariest moment ever for me with my diabetes other than when I hit a high with a blood sugar over one thousand because I had a horrible tooth infection.

How has diabetes contributed to forming you into the person you are today? Mentally, physically, or emotionally?
It has taught me to that I can do anything if I put my mind to it.

Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 regular sized ducks?
I’d rather fight one horse sized duck.
