I was diagnosed in January 2011, when I was 9 years old. I have definitely come a long way over the past 6 years, and I’m still learning more about myself and this disease every day. My hobbies include musical theater (upcoming show is A Chorus Line), singing, acting, dancing (mainly jazz and tap), drawing, and reading. Some days I just want to throw the towel in and give up, but I learned over the years to never, ever give up.
What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
I was eating a bag of chips, and someone asked, ” Don’t you have to check your blood pressure?” I also get the occasional “Are you doing drugs?!” every once in a while.
Tell us a story about how diabetes has affected you.
It has affected the way I live my life. Having to go to the nurse every day before lunch, having to sometimes leave the room to inject myself or have a juice box, and just being a lot more responsible than I would have been without this disease.
