My name is Kaylee and I am 12 years old. Last summer I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I actively participate in diabetes events in my community to try to get more people educated about diabetes. I even did a presentation at school this past year for students and parents on Type 1 diabetes. It’s important that people know the warning signs.
What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
Someone actually asked me “Did you eat too much sugar”? – I responded that I have Type 1 diabetes and my pancreas does not work. It had nothing to do with me eating too much sugar!
How do you inspire others?
I try to do my best to let everyone around me know that I’m just like them other than I have to take a shot before meals and at bed time. Other than that I can do everything else that they can and I don’t let diabetes stop me from doing whatever it is I set my mind to do!
Tell us a story about how diabetes has affected you.
My father also has Type 1 diabetes. I grew up watching him struggle with his diabetes and not always make healthy choices. I’m determined to make the best choices I can to take care of myself.
