Kathy P.

Kathy

Hi.  My name is Kathy P and I have lived with type 1 diabetes for 40 years, since age 20.  My extended family is mobbed with type 1’s. I hated living with diabetes.  I found it a total disruption to every aspect of my daily life. But, 3 years ago, my life was really disrupted by unexpected cancer surgery and the resulting complication of “multiple organ shutdown syndrome”.  I was told I’d never be able to walk, breathe without oxygen and would need to be on dialysis until an kidney was secured. Well, I think it was the prior experience of living with the diabetes that made me fight to regain my health. (Surprising the heck out of every provider I was dealing with.)  Today I walk just fine, breathe just fine, and after 14 months on dialysis my kidneys miraculously recovered.

In the aftermath, diabetes currently seems to be a normal part of my routine, which now also includes crossing things off my bucket list, like learning to play bluegrass fiddle at age 60!
