My name is Joe and I am a father of to a beautiful daughter and a handsome son. Married for 7 years. I was told in December 2013 I was diabetic and by summer they redid the test and said it was a false reading so they stopped treating me. In May 2015, I went into Dka. The dr. told my wife had she not been home when I passed out I would not be alive today. The dr told her my diabetes presented as pediatrics dka and they are treating me as a type one until they fully determine if I am diabetic. They said my body acts like t1d but one test shows t2d . Medical mess I am.

What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
What’s it like having diabetes..
My response was very sarcastic. It’s full of cupcakes and rainbows followed by its a pain in the finger lol.

How do you inspire others?
I started my instagram and twitter to post reading and news. I also am working on a short children’s book about diabetes and trying to work with the American Diabetes Association. Working on getting a bill passed in Ohio that would allow a driver to list diabetic on their driver license so if they don’t have an ID bracelet and something happens the emergency response teams know. Finally, I take part in Step out the walk to cure diabetes.

Tell us a story about how diabetes has affected you.
Diabetes changed my life forever after being near death in May from dka. My entire diet changed.I have a hard time working out due to a severe knee injury that occurred in February 2015 but I managed to get my dads diabetes under control for the first time in 20+years ..I guess seeing his son almost die was an eye opener.

How has diabetes contributed to forming you into the person you are today? Mentally, physically, or emotionally?
Mentally, it is rough to stay positive but when I see my numbers in control and my wife and daughter praises me, it really helps keep me on track. Physically, it drains me from highs and lows but I feel healthier with my eating habits. Emotionally, I feel great somedays.

Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 regular sized ducks?
One horse sized duck . It wouldn’t be a fair fight if I beat up 100 regular ducks. I would tame the horse size duck and make him a star.
