My name is Jade. I was born profoundly deaf at birth and american sign language (asl) definitely is my primary language. I was diagnosed with type one diabetes when I was 12 and had to stay in the hospital for 3 days and 2 nights to learn how to give myself shots, check my blood sugars, counting carbs and things like that. I was also diagnosed with junior rheumatoid arthritis when I was 15 years-old in sophomore year back in high school. I am a sophomore now, almost junior in college.

What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
Can you have sex if you have diabetes? I responded with nothing and laughed.

Has anyone told you that you couldn’t do something due to your diabetes, and you proved them wrong?
Some people think I can’t take care of myself because i was just a little girl and my a1c ended up to 6.0. Now my mostly recent a1c was 6.4, still strong and stronger everyday!
