I am 16 and Valentine’s Day will be my 15 year anniversary. With type 1 diabetes. I have had it since I was one and have done everything from shots, Medtronic pumps, to my current Omnipod. I am so used to diabetes that when people ask me how it has changed my life I honestly cannot answer because I don’t know the difference. I have gone to 2 diabetes camps; I did 1 summer of little shot and have gone to camp kudzu 3 times! I play tennis and volunteer for an animal rescue group, I do what everyone else does without my diabetes getting in the way.
What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
The weirdest question I have gotten about my diabetes is whether or not I can fix it. People have asked me if I could simply exercise my diabetes away. That actually happened. I said no.
How has diabetes contributed to forming you into the person you are today? Mentally, physically, or emotionally?
Mentally, my diabetes has made me stronger. I have learned not to sweat the little things because things could be a lot worse. I have learned that it’s ok to not be okay all of the time.
Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 regular sized ducks?
I would rather fight one horse sized duck than 100 regular sized ducks because I think it would look so awesome that even if it kicked my butt it’d be worth it JUST to see that thing!
