Our daughter Evelyn was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 18 months and is 13 years old. We have been living with diabetes as a huge part of our parenting lives and decided long ago that we would be open and matter of fact about it all-we’ve met 12 celebrities with diabetes that have also been on the cover of Diabetes Forecast Magazine-and we advocate by talking to other newly diagnosed kids and parents about our experiences growing up with T1D.
What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
Are you allowed to eat that-it has sugar in it?
“I can eat anything you can eat-but I need to stab myself after.”
Has anyone told you that you couldn’t do something due to your diabetes, and you proved them wrong?
People don’t say I can’t do anything-because I don’t sit still long enough for them to think they can stop me!
How do you inspire others?
Our Family Diabetes Project (@FiveWildOnez on Twitter) where we have met 12 celebrities that have been on the cover of Diabetes Forecast magazine has been an awesome experience!
Tell us a story about how diabetes has affected you.
I’ve had diabetes almost my whole life-it’s as much a part of my life as anything else that is a part of me.
Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 regular sized ducks?
One horse sized duck-with giant bread crumbs as a weapon to defeat it!
