I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was 16 years old. At the time, I was focused on my friends, being a part of my high school dance team, deciding where I wanted to apply for college, and figuring out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Diabetes came as a surprise, after my best friend noticed the symptoms and told me to see a doctor. I am so thankful for her, and her medical knowledge, as I don’t know if I would have sought medical attention otherwise. I had a difficult time adjusting at first, and admit that I still have difficulty from time to time. Instead of holding myself back, and telling myself that I “can’t” because of diabetes, I have made a point to educate others, and grow as a person. I have also found my love for baking and the culinary arts. It is my goal to someday own a bakery, and wake up every day creating works of art that I can be proud of. Who would have thought that a Type 1 Diabetic would not only be able to “create her cakes, but eat them too?” 🙂
