My name is Cindy! I will be a senior in college this Fall studying Inclusive Early Childhood Education! I have had diabetes for 8 1/2 years. Fun Fact: I was diagnosed on World Diabetes Day (November 14th, 2006)! I love bonfires, playing my guitar, skiing, and reading.
Question 1: What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
I used to work at a kid’s after school program. During our end of the year party I was grilling hot dogs. One of the kids asked if she could help. I said no because while it’s not raw meat, we’re going to let the adults cook them. She looked at me and said, “Oh yeah, I’ve heard that you can get diabetes from eating raw meat!” After laughing I explained to her how someone does get diabetes. I told that I was a diabetic…she got wide eyed and then avoided me the rest of the day!!! Gotta love kids!
Question 2: Has anyone told you that you couldn’t do something due to your diabetes, and you proved them wrong?
Every time I eat dessert 😉
On a more serious note, I was told I was not going to be able to travel overseas because I wouldn’t be able to manage my diabetes. I have been to Europe twice now on missions trips totaling a stay of 2 months and never had any significant problems from my diabetes!
Question 3: How do you inspire others?
Diabetes is something that affects me every day but it’s also an very day reminder to me of the work that the Lord has done in my life. I have come to truly accept and believe Psalm 139:14 “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows it very well.” The Lord created me to be exactly the way I am, diabetes and all. I continue to use my diabetes for His glory to inspire others. I have seen numerous ways in which my story has touched the lives of the people around me! It is truly amazing!
