A half glass full kind of girl. Life only gives you what you can handle!
What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
Having to explain what type of diabetic I am, Type 1.5 or LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults) which there is not enough awareness about the differences in type 1 & 2 let alone other types like 1.5 especially in England. So, my response to explain what is LADA is that ‘everyday my pancreas dies a little more’ 😂😂😂
Has anyone told you that you couldn’t do something due to your diabetes, and you proved them wrong?
Constantly being told not to push myself physically too much because I will exhaust myself but I prove them wrong by regularly planning my day and include nap time. As funny as that sounds it works wonders.
How do you inspire others?
I don’t particularly inspire others but I make it my mission to live a normal life and live a same fast paced life like any other healthy person my age.
Going from 85kgwhen first diagnosed just under 3 years ago to now 66kgs with lifestyle changes shows that anything is possible. Whoever you are and whatever your situation. (The weight loss is what currently is inspiring a few people around me)
Tell us a story about how diabetes has affected you.
Diabetes has affected me since I was diagnosed at the brink of adulthood two months after my 18 birthday. It made me look at my lifestyle differently. Something young people don’t really do unless necessary. With no family history of diabetes the illness is a mystery and 18 months after being diagnosed I found out what type of diabetic I was. Luckily when I was diagnosed I had just started a local university instead of one miles away which allowed me to continue and finish my degree with the support of my family whilst coming to terms and learning how to deal with this illness.
How has diabetes contributed to forming you into the person you are today? Mentally, physically, or emotionally?
Today after a lot of self pity, I am a half glass full kind of girl ‘why not me?’ Kind of attitude, life doesn’t give you anything you can’t handle. Giving me that kick up the *** I needed I now eat healthier and am more active. I go to the gym at least 4 times a week. Exercise is vital to keeping those sugars down and should never be underestimated!
Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 regular sized ducks?
