Caitlin

I’m a carefree teen, I love to enjoy life in every perk and benefit that throws my way. Life is beautiful.

What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
Does that mean you’re going to die if you eat sugar?
I answered by eating a sweet and asking, “am I still alive?”

Has anyone told you that you couldn’t do something due to your diabetes, and you proved them wrong?
Yes! Due to only being diagnosed 6 months ago. And with other health issues accompanying. Everyone told me I couldn’t climb mt kozioskio the highest mountain in Australia, but I did it. A few hypos but I did it!

How do you inspire others?
I don’t find myself any different from anyone else, but my friends look up to me as someone who can go through anything with a smile and admire that.

Tell us a story about how diabetes has affected you.
Diabetes has taken a toll on my life for a good while now. I was only diagnosed as a 17 year old this year. It’s a whole new concept I have to adjust to, and for someone who try’s to remain positive all the time I took this so negatively. I thought why did this happen to me? This isn’t fair! I eat well!! And almost being of legal age to drink (18)  and party I was upset that Id be stopped doing that. It really did effect me for a good few months but now I’ve made amazing friends in a support group, it’s keeping me healthy and I know so much more about what I’m feeding my body, I think it’s one step ahead from the kids my age that’s just feeding their bodies crap!

How has diabetes contributed to forming you into the person you are today? Mentally, physically, or emotionally?
When I got diagnosed I got hit with a few other life threatening health complications so it wasn’t easy for someone like myself that always try’s to see the positive to take it lightly. But through months of understanding and shaping, I believe I’ve grown from this. It’s made me see how strong I can be, it’s made me see the health benefits of eating healthy. It’s made me see that your health should always become your first priority. And it made me see who really cares.

Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 regular sized ducks?
100 regular size ducks
