My name is Ashley and I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 10. I am now 27 years old. I am getting married this year and looking forward to my future. I am an avid reader, love listening to music, enjoy a good hike, and my most recent obsession is working out! Here’s one thing I am trying to live by: Never let diabetes stand in the way of your dreams.
Has anyone told you that you couldn’t do something due to your diabetes, and you proved them wrong?
I am constantly asked “Are you sure you can have that? Are you sure you can do this?” It fuels me to prove that diabetics can do anything they put their minds to, just like everyone else. It has also made me aware of how important it is to continue to educate others and spread awareness.
How do you inspire others?
I have recently become a fitness fanatic! I do not want diabetes to hold me back from living my life. Hike those mountains, lift those weights, run those miles…there is nothing that can stop you from pursuing your dreams and meeting your goals!
How has diabetes contributed to forming you into the person you are today? Mentally, physically, or emotionally?
I feel like having diabetes has made me grow up pretty quickly. I learned a lot about being responsible at a very young age. It has knocked me down and I have learned to rise above it. Having diabetes has made me a stronger person.
