I have always hated needles. I still do. But now I have diabetes. Rule #1: Others can make diabetic jokes. But you need to know them. I’ve had people make jokes to me that aren’t okay, but then with my friends we all joke that diabetes is a choice. You’ve got to make sure the person is okay with it though. Rule #2: Come up with a good reason why you have the weird looking device attached to your hip. Rule #3: Change your lancets once a year.
What is the weirdest question you’ve been asked about your diabetes, and how did you respond?
My friend asked me if I had terminal diabetes. I said yes and then my other friend told him that diabetes is one of the 7 deadly sins.
Has anyone told you that you couldn’t do something due to your diabetes, and you proved them wrong?
My dad tells me all the time jokingly that I can’t eat things because I have diabetes and then I eat the whole thing.
How do you inspire others?
I make jokes about diabetes so people realize you can live with it.
Tell us a story about how diabetes has affected you.
One time I was in dress rehearsal for my musical and I went low. I had no candy so I had to call my diabetic friend and he came up with food.
How has diabetes contributed to forming you into the person you are today? Mentally, physically, or emotionally?
Physically, diabetes stunted my growth. Since I was ten when I was diagnosed, puberty stopped and I stopped growing at 4’10”.
Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 regular sized ducks?
Both at the same time.
